We run a base station in the field, GPS systems all (I think?) record elevation at the same time as data for steering etc, if you have JD and go into ops centre you can get elevation maps as a layer for any recorded operation such as harvesting/spraying etc. You can upload these layers into tiling software to plan your scheme ahead of time

we use the JD radio rtk signal to provide elevation data to an ag leader integra display and the intellislope software, you can pre plan the scheme or survey each run as you travel down the field to your start point and the software tells you if your depth and fall parameters can be met, is a fantastically easy system to use once you get going
And there I am driving up hill at a flag then getting out and moving it for the next run.

Horses for courses. On flat ground it’s much easier to plan efficiently if you have a gps elevation survey. Otherwise you have to take and record levels manually.

That can’t be right! Re draining doesn’t cost £5k/acre. You must be even more confused than usual.
My recent experience of drainage costs is about £1k/acre for 100mm drains backfilled with stone every 30-40 yards, and then moled diagonally across. So if you were doing herringbone laterals off each of those runs I can easily see you'd reach £5k/acre pretty quickly.
