Dreaded Ad-Blue

Unless I've read it wrong, aren't JCB engines adblue and DPF free? If they can do it,why can't the rest?
Yes but that just may be changing any time soon. They buy in engines for their larger models of course and they are currently using AGCO engines in their newer models. With Adblue.

It is surely only a matter of time before they manufacture their own six cylinder engines.

I should add that it is relatively easy to make sluggishly accelerating engines fitted to torque convertors or mostly running at constant revs that met the regulations, but these would not be suitable for farm tractors with that state of tune.

Commercial Fuel Solutions do an auto shutoff one for less than half that. They also do a comparable mega expensive ZVA one that has a magnetic filler neck (matched to opening in tank) that is designed to stop mis-fuelling:

Symon Jacobsen sells a chip for fendts to disable ad-blu some will have been done,my fendt has a 5 year warranty so I'm reluctant to do it.

Ad-blu is a pain in the arse,I usually set the diesel filling and go and do another job, that other job is now filling ad-blu.(n)
sorry for late reply - Steinbauer have stopped producing them ..... not enough sold and a few niggles

Symon

I thinks that's the rub of it. Folks that have never used the AdBlue first freak out at the prospect, read some scary crap on the internet....then actually start using it, realise its no big deal and carry on.

I can't imagine the Steinbauer chip would be cheap either, no doubt invalidate the warranty too so folks don't bother.

Who saw on the news the other day going on about the air quaity and how they were picking up high levels of fertiliser in towns and citys, they blamed it on farmers putting it on their fields.I did think it could be all the buses and lorrys with add blue putting up the results.

Urea and nitrogen-oxides (from the engine) go into the SCR and water and nitrogen come out the other end. End of.

Just buy a 200l ad blue tank with electric pump and put it on your bowser. Got 4 machines as blue here it's not really a bother.

We had a Fendt 828 on hire a couple of years back, working very hard on the pto all day, used 30-40 litres of ad-blue a day, that's nearly 10 litres to every 100l of diesel.
Flat out that's about another £1.60 an hour running cost

I'll be going over to ad-blue next month,is there a recommended shelf life on the stuff?
I'm in the same position as you (same tractor model as well I think) ....I believe ad blue does have a shelf life ....not knowing how much I'm going to be using I'm undecided how to buy the stuff :-(

I'm going for 200 litres first I think, don't want to buy 1000 litres then have it sat around for ages

we finnished our first ever 1000l cube this summer it was 3 years old and tractor didnt complain at all, if you keep it out of direct sunlight or put a cover over it, you should be ok. tractor did 2000hours in that time, so there mus have been something not right with the fendt above! we have our 2nd ad blu machine coming now, so the new cube will get used much faster.

its certainly a lot cheaper to buy 1000l at a time.

Despite what some selling the stuff claim, if you keep it indoors out of the sun it will last a few years, no problem.

In terms of quantity, because JD are not using this as the primary emission control in these new models, they are claiming far lower AdBlue usage than other makers. Usage also depends on the engine size and how hard it's worked.

If it's just the one machine, then I'd recommend you start with a barrel and see how you get on.
