Drilling Through The Greenery

Ok, so not exactly the same league of greenery but here goes.

Crop of winter barley which we knocked *a lot* with herbicides, bit than and over-run with the dreaded BG. Sprayed off last week and drilled with linseed using the vaderstad drill without any cultivating parts. I thought this was a fairly small amount of soil movement given a) the land clearly had been moved in the autumn, b) we were rolling behind the drill so would be at least cracking the crust anyway, and c) on standard 5" rows rather than a lot of the other DD drills on say 16.6mm rows.

6m drill, 10kmph, already got it in the shed, pulled by a little crawler.

Hope it grows now. But plenty of moisture so good chance.

Brill. Did you use roundup to take the beans out - were you worried that they might be shading out any nastier weeds? Do you reckon the beans will have contributed much if any N by now?

We sprayed the grass weeds out earlier with falcon, which did a great job,the roundup will only check the beans giving the barley a chance then we can take the beans out later with cmpp.this is the first time trying this so are unsure how much N will be available ,there are loads of nodules on the beans so should be something we have put 25kg of DAP down the spout to give it a boost.

Id be tempted to leave those beans ...... I know august was early drilling but beans are a remarkable crop so may of made it to harvest......

How did you plant the beans anyway?

It was tempting to leave the beans, but we are moving into DD system using cover cropping they were on flower.drilled using a Horsch CO8 with Bougaut knife coulters straight into stubble.

First go at drilling into green cover today.

I thought I would have a go at drilling HLS wild bird seed mix into last years bird cover.

A learning exercise. Any advise would be appreciated.

The seed mix is cotswolds 1 year mix of linseed, millet, quinoa, triticale, mustard etc... Soil type sandy loam.

Plan is to spray with glyphosate in the next few days.

There is plenty of brome, meadow grass, slugs.

Not much advice really shut the gate and watch it grow, thats what I do.
Best of luck hoping to do some bird cover in next couple of weeks the same way.

Has anyone tried drilling into a standing covercrop with a tined drill such as a claydon?
Have seen Joe Boys pics on here drilling straight into vol Borage with a Claydon Hybrid, looked good, allows crop to suck more moisture out before drilling.
