Drop side tipper door modification to hydraulic.

I have a 10t drop side tipping trailer who’s is brilliant for me and just what I need however the back door is annoying me. I use it for gathering rough timber, building rubbish, scrap, dung, hay/Haylage delivery, and moving a bit of gravel. My issue is that due to the way the door works bulky stuff jams in it and it’s a manual lock on the door so not handy having to jump out etc all the time. I’m forever messing about with it or trying to get things unstuck.

I was thinking of getting rid of the back door setup and modify it to work like a dump trailer and make the door fold down to hinge from the bottom. My thinking was make it like a bale extension that can fold up vertically. Then I can use it down as a bale trailer and up as a tipper.

before anyone suggests buy more trailers and have one for each that won’t work for me as I need to go and deliver fodder and bring dung home. Plus the building work I do requires the drop sides for hand loading. It’s just the back door that’s my issue.

if anyone has attempted this or has suggestions or finds unexpected issues I’d love to see what you think.

what I have is basically the same as the Drop slider in the pictures and I’d like to modify it to be like the NC setup.

Put 2 tall corner posts on it and hinge the tailgate from the top of them, this will allow you to tip muck etc out.

Easy enough to make a hydraulic clamp for the door catch too.

That was my fist idea. It also worked for a while but it’s now broken as it’s a bit wobbly. Plus some things were still getting stuck in it.

Just make one side of the top tailgate hinge swivel sideways aswell. Release the tailgate, and hook it back to the side boards with some chain or a shackle.

that’s an interesting idea but I’m not really a fan of bar door style doors on trailers. I have worked with them on HGv’s before and although they have their advantages they can be a bit dangerous if you need to run with the back door open for any reason. Plus get hooked on things and broken easily.

Yes can agree with that. Ours only have a piece of chain to fasten them to the side and can be prone to bouncing out and the door swinging free going down the road. Not very safe. Bit for short carts on farm of irregular loads such as stumps they are perfect. Never need to worry about clearance or anything. If it can fit in the trailer it will be able to be tipped off.
