difference seems to me to be the level of heat which is desiccating everything up i dont remember it as consistently hot in '76
Stubbles with a lot of RC and Chicory in them have gone so dry and hard they scrunch as you walk over them or ride over with the bike ,and then it seems like they are going to cause punctures

Was it i dont remmeber that well. I was still at school and i do remmber it seemed weird Dad feeding hay in August.

Theres a lot of dairy cattle around here and they will mostly be on conservered forage will be worrying for them good if its a hard winter as well.

Lot of smoke up over the back tonight someones had a fire that will be the biggest worry atm for a week or so if it stays like this.

most around us are on winter ration, we start drying off after TB test next week, so they are getting 32 kg silage, and 2 kg blend, and some very high DM grass, we have enough grass to keep going on that, we have about 6 acres of 'mature' grass, thinking of haying it, as cows will only trample it down, and hay may well be needed, or valuable.

l can remember 76 ending in a huge thunder storm, we were in a barn, old chap that was there, was absolutely terrified, white shaking, sobbing, reckoned the lightning was going to kill him.
never seen anyone like that, except in the films.
Yes. and when it started raining, late november, it didn't stop until 81. That's when bale wrapping became popular. Well it was bags to begin with, and those who bought belt balers quickly learned their mistake.
Indeed followed by 12 or 15 years of catchy difficult summers.

Weather judgement, is one thing none of us can foretell, just as we don't know WTF its going to do next year.
Someone mentioned bags to me the other day, thought NO, but l suppose for a small bit, and no wrapper .... if you can still buy them.
then thinking again, those bags were replaced by an expensive wrapper, or a combi baler.
haven't used a bag for 25 yrs, but they were a godsend then.

sealing them well was /is the fiddly bit . cable ties and doubled over still isn't 100%
but then wrapping isn't 100% air tight either its just that it can be mechanised.
