East Anglian Belted Galloway Group Summer Herd Visit Holkham Saturday 17th August 2019

We are delighted with the response from folks wishing to attend our inaugural herd visit.

Tonight we reached 60 acceptances and will now operate a waiting list for any additional requests as our hosts have capacity for 60 on the tractor trailers
Nicola Chapman and I very much look forward to meeting so many Beltie friends on the 17th. When we first discussed the planning of potential events at our first informal meeting at Carr Farm in February we had no idea how much support we would gather for cattle showing fixtures or for events like Holkham

We have guests travelling from herds in mid Wales, Yorkshire and Worcestershire as well as butchers and others with a broader interest in the breed.

Nicola and I look forward to welcoming you all and thank all of the members of the East Anglian Belted Galloway Group for their support and enthusiasm

When you gather at the new cattle sheds, the older ones alongside my father built. We used to farm there from the early '50s until he died and Holkham took the land in hand. We now farm 3 miles away, no more beef but Brown Swiss dairy cows.

Rather busy @JP1 but! they bought some of my Lincoln's for their nature reserve project so a report on how they are doing would be good! We were in that neck of the woods at a Tenant's farm looking at his Lincoln Herd 3 or 4 weeks ago. On the Blickling estate.

The Group were kindly invited to a herd visit to #Holkham on Saturday.

As guests of the 8th Earl of Leicester , we were greeted by #Holkhamfarming Manager James Beamish and for the entire day the Livestock team showed us the Belted Galloway herd, commercial suckler cows, new and impressive centralised cattle housing nearing completion , the nature reserves and ending with the #HolkhamHall #fieldtofork exhibition and a hog roast.

The Field to Fork Exhibition is a magnificent tribute to the groundbreaking agricultural heritage of the estate, celebrating the provenance of the food they produce and an essential and positive demonstration of the vision and tremendous investment that Holkham embodies. The bowler hats on display are the original that were styled and invented for the gamekeepers of Holkham

With over 70 attendees coming from as far afield as Cumbria, Yorkshire, Mid Wales, Hampshire and Worcestershire, it was a day to remember and we were blessed with the weather.

I have received so many messages of appreciation and it all belongs to Jon Smith, Livestock Manager at the Estate, to Billy, Andy, Henry and Julian who made us so welcome and gave their whole Saturday to us

Thank you
