Electric fence tester

I've an old white Gallagher digital tester that displays the voltage. It must be 20 years old and has had that many years abuse! Gallagher do seem to make better quality stuff as the wire reels have also stood up while reels from other companies all break fairly quickly.

We used to have a neighbour, who, every time he visited would tell me the fence wasn't working, in fact he would insist on touching it to show it wasn't working and after a couple of seconds would curse and jump back.
But he moved.
my neighbour will grab the wire and tell you it isnt working!!bloody barstweard:sneaky::LOL:
you can see his hand twitching!!
took me a while when i was a kid to learn that!

If you're on a budget, then you could always use the "grab a neighbour/friend/whatever and touch the fence" method. You'll hardly feel anything and the other lucky person will feel quite a lot.

I have this one. Its a shame its too big to regularly carry but very useful because you can remotely turn the mains fencer on and off from anywhere on the farm by just touching it on the wire.

Decided to invest in a more expensive Electric Fault Finder as have alot of electric wire here now..

Deciding between the Gallagher, Rutland or the Rappa Speedrite

What is everyone's views on each one??? They are all roughly the same price as well

Had one of these...

for about 5 years - does exactly what it says on the tin. Used pretty much every day and has 2 or 3 new batteries a year. The arrow, which shows you which way to go looking for a short, is very handy.Never had a problem with it.

got a gallagher shows kv well and clearly/reliably but its very expensive, hopefully it will be a long lasting thing. not used it on fault finding though.

what about one of these....... https://www.electric-fence.co.uk/voss-farming-fence-tester-digital.html

I got the £9.95 version off that website, when I bought some other stuff. It seems to work very well, but I'm already wondering why I bothered:facepalm:. I've fenced sheep, cattle and horses in with electric fences for over 30 years (leccy fences have been used on the farm a long time before that too) without ever having a 'tester'. If you put your foot on the wire, or lean a metal stake against it, and it gives a good 'crack', then you'll be right.

ah,.. but i also like fiddling with technical stuff .....:D

there is a collection of fencers kicking around here from the last umpteen years hotline ones, that still just about work and bit more modern gallagher ones 2 battery ones

i want more knowledge on their power, and then i can have a clear out - sell them as in full working order.......or not.

Most of my fencing problems are down to poor connections especially croc clips, does any manufacturer actually produce insulated croc clips that will stay on when the wire gets knocked ? The other problem is finding connecting cables between pig's runs either chewed through or the insulation smashed in the morning. As the pigs are still in their runs I put this down to badgers as the cables are a couple of inches off the ground. Have tried surrounding them with orange safety netting so that the obstruction is visible but that just gets ripped to shreds. Perhaps I need armoured cable ?

apart from wire troubles . ir mine problems have been simply down to not buying a powerful enough fencer in the first place.

small pairs of mole grips will clamp over the clips, or clamp the wires together- especially if they were modified to do without the croc clips

We have a lot of interconnected fences apart from the main connection from the fencer put together over the years, whole lot needs to be redone with half a dozen lengths of wire instead of twenty plus lengths.
