Employing a driver. Rules and regs

Just throwing a few ideas around.
One is to have someone part time on a self employed basis to do me a bit of driving.
It would be a 3.5t vehicle with 3.5t trailer. Vehicle will have tacho.

Question is what do I need in terms of operators license, cpc etc etc.

Obviously the correct insurance.

It wouldn't be haulage for hire or reward. Just moving my own purchased goods

You’ll need a restricted operators licence. Driver will count as a mobile worker and be bound by UK regs.

In terms of payload mpg I reckon you’d be better off with a 7.5ton van.

Double cab is classed as a dual purpose vehicle. When I bought my defender I looked into it quite a bit, as I tow commercially for the local NH dealership. My circumstances may be a little bit different to yours as I am primarily a Forage merchant and Contractor, meaning I can operate under the 100km limit. I don’t need a tacho either .

I suggest you google the regs-driver hour, O licence. Lots of incorrect info on here, better to go the the horse's mouth.

Under 7.5t I don't think you need an O licence, but with most van + trailer combinations you'd hardly be able to carry any weight.. Driver who passed car test after 1996 is limited to 3.5t max allowable wt,Before 96 7.5t limit for towing vehicle, trailer & load (depending on size of towing vehicle)

You're warning about misinformation yet you're spreading it!

For business use, as soon as you exceed 3500kgs you need a tacho and o license.
