Enthusiasm

Not sure this is the right word but let’s start with it
How many of us find that enthusiasm for expanding or taking on new project gets less as we get older
Or is it because as we get older we have discovers the hard way that not all that glitters is gold

On the other hand is it me just feeling off at this time of year after a hard day of trying to succeed

No, I don't think it is you feeling off this time of year. But November is the dreariest month of all to me.

There is no doubt about the fact that we are far more enthusiastic to expand when we are younger.
Sometimes (but not always) experience shows that it isn't always the right decision.

Willy waving/My willy is bigger than yours, often means that their gearing ratio is bigger too.
And if it isn't, it's often only because the value of the land they bought went up, thanks to IHT relief and Rollover.
Economies of scale only work if you don't need to excessively re-tool as you expand.

Eventually, we realise that there is no point in being a busy fool.
But I don't think it is right to suppress the enthusiasm of the young amongst us.

Time = experience. Experience teaches you that taking risks all the time does not make you richer, just busier. By the time you've been to a funerals of folk younger than you then it makes you adjust your priorities a bit.

Youth = inexperience and the energy to set the world on fire. Time to go and do it all while you still know everything!

I used to be really enthusiastic about my business !, so much so in 2014 I started building my own yard with a 100x50 shed. But getting involved with the RPA in 2015 put payed to all that, after buying entitlements and then not getting payed my cash flow crashed !. I ended up having to get a job with someone else and lost most of my own work, I have got going again but I’ve very little work and wondering if it’s worth the bother.

Thank you for that it was encouraging to me just to read
I always try to actively encourage the youngsters as they have the energy to wave there Willy’s where is older ones have waved them so much over the years the flag only goes half mast now lol

Does sound familiar story I have had my fair share of rpa disasters as well
Now I don’t even forecast the rpa money in the cash flows as it might never appear if it does it’s a bonus

Well done! But your profile doesn't show your age @Forage Trader.
And I'm an older model than @Stevethemeat is too.

By the way, cd's went out a few years ago, according to my daughter!

Which reminds me: They say that money doesn't buy you happiness. My daughter was lucky enough at school to have won a prize given to her by Trever Baylis, the inventor of the clockwork radio. Until that invention, he had struggled for years to make ends meet. One of his friends is Michael Caine, who said "I've been rich, I've been poor. Rich is best. Not a lot of people know that!"

Not very enthusiastic here about producing more commodities that people don't really seem to want for ever cheaper prices in real terms. It's been done to death IMO.

Look at the beet. If I fall short of my contract I lose income. If I produce more than my quota I have to give it away. Not very exciting is it? Neonics banned now so not in the seed coating but the price of the seed hasn't come down in proportion. Shafted each and every way. But I have got used to it.

Cereal prices up but yields down due to drought so no net gain there either. I am not investing any more time or money in agricultural expansion that's for sure. It's a mugs game.

I used to like doing up the machinery but now find its a time and money pit so the bare minimum of tackle will suffice even its not ideal. It will do.

Crikey, I must be hitting 50. Starting to do what my dad did at that age.

I don’t think old has an actual age it’s more like when you get to a point that you done a lot know quite a bit (not everything) and realist your getting well down your tunnel and the light is somehow getting dimmer lol
Might be feeling different next week when I realise the dimmer switch is close by

There is always a reason I can't make a fortune. If stuff I produce in the East (like straw) is scare and dear in the West then all the profit goes in haulage costs. There seems to be no way to make a fortune in farming. I was just thinking today how much haulage has out of my business. 25% of my gross output of beet for starters. Don't blame the hauliers, but the derv and tax on it and all the other costs they are now saddled with. UK is becoming a very expensive place to produce low value commodities.

Retail sales look a better option, or services of some sort. Farming just turns the money over. It doesn't generate much at all and we take al the risk.

Never mind. It's a dreary time of time. I'll go and burn some tree trimmings or something. Brings sod all in, but makes the place look tidy and cheers me up.

I’ve still got time to take out a mortgage and see it off at the other end
But my experience says that there’s a lot of bumpy road out there and unforeseen territory
The question is do I want to expand yes do I want more work no
Do I want to bring a youth along to do the work and enjoy educating them yes
Do I want the hassle of a youth
Well yes actually it’s rewarding
