Ergot

agree about a gravity separator. In all my years of sorting out ergot I have never had a problem after a load has been over a table. In a couple of cases the wheat was put over the table twice to get the pesky ones out, but that was just a case of recycling the output line back into the feed in line so no double handling. The other benefit of a gravity separator is the fact it will increase hagberg from unmarketable milling wheat to full spec stuff. If you can't justify a massive spend, I've seen some real Heath Robinson affairs which have done the job well, just needed a bit more time and tinkering. Id also recommend a pre-cleaner in the line prior to the table to take out the majority of the rubbish before the GS does it's thing.

So have we just found a more expensive way of taking another 1% of all the ergot out of a bulk of grain by colour sorting it vs gravity separating???

Current feedback seems to suggest that 100% ergot free wheat is not in plentiful supply this year. Reckon if they dont like mine, I'll take it back and wait for them to get a bit more in the real world come May.

if you load with an auger or from a bulk bin the ergot will not get in the sampler as it is lighter than wheat and ends up at the side of the lorry where they do not sample

we never had a rejection for ergot till we bucket loaded leaving the ergot mixed in every bucket but often saw ergot when loading or harvesting

just look at the grain as it lands from an auger or a bulk bin the light bits end up at the side
loading direct from the opico does the same

if there is a lot it can be seen on the top but low levels get through

Which is why it is standard sampling procedure to include at least one sample from within 50cm of the side of the trailer.

In 2012, they proudly put my beautifully high protein and hagberg, albeit only 72kg bushel Cordiale, into the feed bin when moved at harvest. How vexed was I come November when the millers realised that no-one had anything at 76 bushel and suddenly were my best friend. Sounds like the UK has plenty of decent milling wheat, albeit with some ergot in it. After a month when they realise they are rejecting 50% of their intake, opinions will change.
