That might be the case financially but it is increasingly not acceptable for a lot of milk contracts. Producers are going to have to learn to present marketable calves or cut their cloth accordingly. With beef prices where they are at present at least there is a value in taking calves on. as has been said on here before it may be the future case that you merely minimise your loss on them. For most though a bullet will not be an option.

Not even financially, for the welfare of those calves, we're flying and understand that our beef cattle at whatever age we sell them at they need to be well grown to make the money and everyone has 1 or 2 sh!t ones, but after 8 weeks in the works world be a better option if you're under tb and don't have the space.

We’re regularly shut down with Tb, to the extent last season - autumn 22 - as we got full I had to sell 40 calves under 42 days to an AFU (59.75kg avg) for less than 500 quid. That’s the terms of my milk contract, either keep them or sell at what you can get. It hurt but we couldn’t carry any more.

Comment from someone I know who is near one of their farms 'we know the knackerman and sometimes he can't keep up'.
We were shut down for nearly 30 years, and know the pain of selling stock way to cheaply onto other farms.

Sure is, had to rent farm buildings just to help with over stocking, which is nearly as painful as selling them cheap, really glad the cull has helped us get clear, tb reading tomorrow

Good luck.
It would be acceptable to a milk buyer to shoot those calves in the video if a vet gave their say so. It's a welfare issue, the state of them, not forgetting the evident risk of a publicity problem. You would also have to prove a good plan not to let it happen again.

I saw a while back they were selling the silaging machinery off (that they had been moving between farms) after a Quick Look at companies house records, it makes more sense.
The silage gear never made sense mind, was just an ego builder. Imagine being in Leicestershire and having to go to Cumbria to do 1st cut. Staffing that would be a nightmare
