If you want to keep number the same you'll have to buy the normal amount.
Not if you breed your own, and yes the price to be costed in
Its far easier on the actual accounts ( money paid out, or not as the case maybe )
Could have gone at the height of the hog £ storm, That makes them dear !!!
In it for the long ride, so you win, you loose. But imported disease, foot rot, worms ect, kept at bay

Of course that's an option, but it's not a possibility at this time of year if you don't already have your own home bred sheep on the ground.

We breed our own here, and I wouldn't want to buy in, but it does add complications.

with higher replacement cost better off buying better ewes maybe a few less and look after them better ,(same with rams) cheaper ewes will look dearer when it comes to cull price and performance , and everyone will keep the bottom artificially up ,looking to save a few £ , Good terminal x lambs still in the £140-150 area for august ,
Had a lad up here buying yesterday been hit hard with barbers pole etc , he always jumps at cheap ewes on FB marketplace , told him thats where his problem comes from ,cheapies usually have compromised immune systems or carry a burden of some kind and that in turn compromises is own flock .

It must have been very tempting for most when they were worth £200+. I almost killed mine but would have had to buy some back in.
I was very hard on our hoggs in the spring when I was getting rid of the end of lambing culls, barren things and a old ram.
I always keep a few extra every year, so anything with any kind of flaw or a trace of dung on its arse was gone.
A few were good enough sheep and it seemed a bit of a shame to send them off fat, but they made £211 so that helped ease the pain of it all 🙂

IMHO it’s never been as important financially wise to keep your own replacements sheep & cattle wise. I currently need 155 gimmers to replenish my sheep numbers I’m very glad there here ready to go , I also have some to sell privately but not sure what to ask for them . I’ve been up to £190 for cast ewes, scotch mules.

I sold my draft Shetlands to a price I as happy with. Not yet decided what to do about replacements.

Do I use the same budget and accept less ewes?
Buy cheaper ewes?
Buy the same number of similar quality ewes and spent more?
Have a year off buying ewes?
🤔🤔🤔

I killed all my empty ewe hoggs, and anything that failed to rear. Those that reared are in good order and I'm happy with them. And I've weaned 600+ ewe lambs this year. Option D is looking good, but will see what the trade is like in October.

Rightly or wrongly I sold fat lambs the other week at £160.50, same week I bought some shearlings that had lambed as ewe lambs for £160.

They were a touch lean but took them home, quarantine drench of Zolzix with a mineral bolus and put them on good grass and they have transformed and put on a good few kilos in a couple weeks. Still got 4 weeks to go until rams out so hoping they could be the buy of the season for me. Shearlings lambed as ewe lambs are the makings of a decent ewe if managed right.
