Ex-Organic Farming

Hi there,

I was wondering if there were any ex-organic farmers out there who would be happy to speak to me.
No matter if arable, dairy, horticulture, livestock or any other.

I am doing research on this topic, to the reasons 'why farmers leave organic' and it proves very difficult to find a broad range of reverted farmers.

Any help with my studies would be greatly appreciated. I do not want to initiate a broad discussion on the topic but to get in touch with ex-organic farmers who would be happy to help with my research.

Thank you

Yup. 28 years man and boy(organic):ROFLMAO:
2 main reasons for giving up,

Perennial weeds got the better of me eventually.
Premiums weren't as good as they used to be.(Too many jumped on the bandwagon, and f**ked the job up)

Simple as that.:)

Did the supermarket response to the recession play no part?
They went into a frenzy of low priced food which can't have been good for the organic producers.

Ah yes, 3 reasons......
The rot really started in the year 2000, when subsidies were given to people to convert. Overproduction followed 2-3 years later, and supermarkets had what they always wanted....a surplus.
That allowed them to use their unscrupulous methods to screw producers into the ground.

Hi there,

thank you for your replies. Sad as it is, for research I would need to speak to ex-organic farmers face to face. A general discussion and some dropped topics sadly doesn't help me out. If you are interested in having a face to face interview, to go into some more detail I would really appreciate any help. I have send you a private message a few hours ago.

Thank you

I know you did. Anything I'm going to say is going to be on the open forum.

Ditto above. I can sum it all up here in a few words. Premiums to be had were not worth the extra paperwork and could not compensate for higher input costs and lower stocking rate. Certainly not in our case. Have changed very little since coming out, but I make more money on the job now :)
