Excavator trenching bucket

Has anyone used a narrow, tapered bucket to trench in pipes?
I’ve got quite a bit of water pipe to dig in this winter and can’t decide if this will be neater and quicker than the 12” bucket or a nightmare for sticky soil!

If your digging in clay weld a chain in bottom of bucket and attach to front of dipper so it pulls fairly but not very tight when bucket is emptied, unless you like getting out with a shovel regularly

Fab! I have heard about ‘using a chain’ but never understood the how and why.
I have to repair several sections of my land-drains that I cut when putting in the GSHP slinky pipework.
The clay is my nightmare. The rest of the job is fine👍

Had a self emptying bucket for my digger years ago, metal flap instead of a chain, ok as long as you did not bring the dipper too close to the digger.

There are bespoke clay buckets which have very cut away sides.
I will likely do a chain and possibly two as my narrowest bucket is 12” so two chains could perhaps work better than one?

I have some Scandinavian style digging buckets for 8 tonner which have a long bottom and fairly cut back sides (no where near as much as a clay bucket) the theory being you carry material on them rather than in them. If you can resist the urge to fill them right into the back very little sticks in them. Don't be greedy

Maybe a filler piece bolted in the back of the 12” bucket is a way forward. I have a couple of short lumps of sleeper…..

This has just arrived from Scott Engineering. Not the strongest bucket I’ve ever seen but not a lot of money and for the amount of use it will get I’m quite pleased.
I would also say it was an excellent service, rang up on Monday morning because they didn’t list my pin sizes on the web, girl on the phone instantly knew the dimensions, had one in stock and dispatched the same day 👍
