Exhaust brake for 3359

Anyone fitted an exhaust brake to their tractor?

I'm wanting to fit one to the 3350 to take the edge off the speed/revs on the long down hill stretches. I do use the gears going down hill but hate touching the brakes and the load it puts on the 4wd when it comes on when the revs start getting up.
Any experience/advice would be most gratefully received(y)

The only reason I read the post was because the title had me thinking. Can't answer the question though, as I've never seen a Saran engine with an exhaust brake.

Its a good question about a good idea.
I agree. One would think that it's something that could be retrofitted to any engine without much bother.....

What exactly is an exhaust brake, just a valve in the exhaust somewhere ?
The ones I'm looking at were either a butterfly valve, or a sliding valve. Just closes the exhaust of and makes the engine into a compressor as far as I can see.

Can't see a problem if there's a turbo, as long as it was before it, just cuts off the gas flow so it wouldn't be driving the turbine wheel.
Electronics might be a different matter...

watching the tractor pullers and they all had a flap on the intake for emergency stop, not sure if it helps in this case though,
would be interested in whether exhaust brake could be fitted to the modern deeers though

I suspect that it isn't as simple as it seems.

Case has an exhaust brake option on many models. Anyone know whether it can be retro-fitted or whether they use different valve springs or something?

After the turbo ..................
Go for the solid sliding valve plate, have you air available, if so head for a truck breaker.
No idea how the engine will respond, but its owner driven isn't it?

Old NPR baby Isuzu had a switch on the dash, so if you had it switched on, when you took your foot off the accelerator the brake would instantly apply, magical stuff.
Ford Transcontinental with Cummins engine had a solid plate valve and were the most efficient. Butterfly type always tend to leak a bit, especially after a bit of work.

Some of the Welsh sheep lads, pulling two trailers with the D-Max might find this interesting

Not sure loading the engine ,and head gasket, up with all that extra compression is a good idea .
Whilst the idea in general has mechanical merit that engine was never designed to withstand the extra loading , it might well work ( never know until someone tries) but I would have reservations on the ability of the head gasket to cope.

Volvo dumpy trucks have had them for years manually applied ones that is .Never found much retarding effect with them though. Is the USA jake brake the same as in a butterfly valve type or on the valves ?The gaffa did not advise using them as gaskets would blow he would retort.

Jake brake is different.
A jake brake opens an exhiast valve as the piston gets to the top, so it has used energy to compress the gas, and then instead of add diesel and bang, you let it out of the exhaust, so in effect using the compression stroke to do braking. Some excelelnt videos on you tube about it.

I think a jake would be far more effective than a exhaust valve as in teh video above, though i assume thet are designed engine specific?
