Eye problems

Anyone having eye problems in their cattle? Looks like New Forest, but it goes from a white dot to a blind eye at a ferocious pace. Been jabbing the eyelids with penicillin and steroids, and opticlox eye cream, but having to do them 2 to 3 times. Usually have a few a year, but this year I've got over 20 cases (out of 600 cattle)

That's interesting, I've been doing both on our vets advice! Mostly in group, but there are a few elsewhere. Yes, put some spotinor on them yesterday, they've had flectron fly tags in since may

we had this last year, have you flied the cattle ? that pretty well stopped it spreading, then tretoxy (terramyci) long acting a/b. got into trouble with min vet (some b##r rung them) for using a dry cow tube to put in the eye, despite it being the same as eye ointment, I was using 'off label' drugs, cattle were fine, but we had to produce our medicine records, what drugs we had bought, our vets had to come out, hell of a job.
the vet was a Spanish lady, I wonder what would happen in spain ?
this was the 2nd time we have had dealings with min vets last yr, this case, and another were we were accused of sending a calf to market, without stating it had been treated with a/b. luckily, we could prove we hadn't purchased/ used the said a/b. in both these cases, our medicine records were up to date, and in the eye case we could show animals had been treated.
so keep your med records up to date, I am sure we would have been in the s##t if we couldn't have produced them.

Had somebody rung them to say you’d used a DC tube? Or to report cattle in a field with bad eyes?
Or did you tell her you’d used the DC tube, in which case I guess you won’t be doing that again......

Surely you can’t be casting doubt on cattle welfare standards in Spain? Some of them are looked after like Premiership footballers, right up to the point where they wind them up in front of a baying mob in a big stadium, then spear them for pleasure.

I'm putting spotinor on them now - although someone told me yesterday you just as well out water on them instead of spotinor!

We have trouble with feeds on the marsh poking then in the eye when they go in the ditch for a drink. Jab IM of Alamycin LA and a squirt in the eye of an Alamycin based spray does the trick usually.

Have had two last year we just couldn’t cure and ended up blind with a cloudy eye.

We had a big New Forest Eye problem last year, we brought the affected cattle up (dry cows) so we could run them through a race easily to do them with orbenin a couple of times. All healed OK, vet said it was probably 10 times worse last year than typical year. Only consolation was, I didn't realise it until he mentioned it, but if they've had it then they do develop an immunity for future years.

someone reported bad eyes, they blew up quickly, but we had had the vet out, it was when she asked about the ointment, vet had said to use dc tube, we were a bit buggered then, as we'd put eye ointment in the med book anyway, we managed to talk our way out of it, but it just proves you must a) keep the records up to date, and
b)you have got to be careful with what you write!
