Farewell old friend.

We buried a good friend not so long ago who restored old tractors. He used to bring bits and pieces to me for welding or a bit of heat and my son or I would often pop along to give him a hand when lifting something heavy. He passed away during a restoration on a MF35 and we've been asked to finish it off.
This was the scene which greeted us when we opened the barn door. I was ok until I saw his overalls rolled up and left on the gearbox ready for him to come back to the job.

Very personal spaces, workshops. I had to clear the father-in-laws some years back. He had been like a father to me. Very emotional, not something I look forward to doing again. You have my sympathy, for what it is worth.

its sad a real old timers work shop, i remember years ago when the blacksmiths widow took me to his workshop and asked me if there was anything i would like i just blubed, his work shop was an extension of his personality he was a part of it and it was a part of him.
Still have one or two heavy hand tools from a local blacksmith retiring over 45 years ago. I am often reminded of dear old Ned. He was able to shoe horses, build a cart wheel, repair machinery/engines, make wrought iron iron gates, and even construct a whole coach built horse box body from scratch. During the morning if working on a machine he would stop if a horse turned up to be shod. Had a visit to pub at lunch time then indoors for 'dinner'. Afternoon back on machine and horsey folk knew not to turn up unless an emergency. He was born at the beginning of the 20th century and 2 generations of boys (maybe some girls) had immense delight watching him and pumping the old fashioned forge bellows. He would acknowledge with a series of grunts.
The b&astard local authority compulsory purchased his premises then had the cheek to leave derelict for 3 years. Makes me angry thinking about it now.

I love workshops, and the characters who inhabit them.
I lost mine 4yrs ago and i really struggle without it
It now lies empty, along with my former cottage unloved and untended
