Farm Security

Aye-up,

My uncle and cousin have just had a bad time of it. CCTV recorded theives cleaning out just about every single useful item from their sheds over an EIGHT hour period the other night. Eight hours, back and forth from the sheds to the road. Tossers. They took all tools, a brand new ride on mower and a Land Rover with trailer too.

All this whilst they slept not 30 yards away.

Anyone got any really good, useful tips on security that won't break the bank?

Personally I would like to hook my doors up to the mains, but I doubt we are allowed to hurt the poor thief.

Cheers, Pete.

Aye up @Cab-over Pete ,
Sorry to here this bud, happened to me a few year back, it takes some getting over.
Caught the bleeders in the end through DNA evidence from a cig end they dropped.
So what I did was install a Master Blaster alarm system triggered by pir's in the main shed & then link it to an alarm sounder in the house.(y)

When it goes off:
It's the last thing the intruders hear...
Me & the missus are awake after peeling ourselves off the ceiling....
The dogs are definatly awake... & so is our neighbours :).
Cameras are ok but no real deterrent, noise, disturbance & discovery makes them think twice.
Hope this helps

Guy owns a supermarket in the local town, nice guy. Known by his first name plus his dads first name "Harry". Shot and wounded intruders one night, now known as..... no prizes...... "Dirty Harry", and fair f**ks to him too.

it depends if you want to catch them in the act or just to scare them, we have had break-ins on our farm and after the break-in you are on alert for a while but it wears off and you get to thinking that's it but then just when you think you are safe you get another one. a beam across somewhere not obvious linked to a GSM, the GSM will send you a text message instantly the beam is broken if you are on the same network, it can span quite a few meters distance and you can arm it and disarm it via a free phone call to the unit. we install a lot of them on biomass boilers to warn of a fault before the buffer goes cold. you can get it to phone you instead of a text if required or both, with a PAYG sim card it will have credit for ages, the best network is tesco mobile on 02, whereas voda switch you off and steal your money if you do not use it for a while tesco do not. I lost my phone for 18 months and when I got it back it was still connected and working, no chance with voda 6 to 8 weeks and thats it. you could have it so that if you get a text due to a disturbance you can phone the unit and set off a siren or what ever.

years ago - and I'm talking 25 years ago - a friend had a livery yard with a single gated entrance. The teccie boyfriend had set up a device that buzzed in the house every time the gate was opened, could switch off during the day when the girls were coming and going but it alerted them to an intruder late at night.

Another horsey friend had all the stable doors alarmed up and they overslept and hadn't switched it off when I arrived to start mucking out one day... the blooming alarm was so loud I could not stand there and listen to it, it drilled into my brain and would have sent me mad. It could be heard nearly a mile away and it used to give a phone alert too (she worked at a local pub so premises often left unoccupied in evenings). Needless to say they didn't oversleep for many more seconds but it would send any intruder running
