Farming Advisory Services

After a recent conversation, I have been thinking about the number of advisory services [either free or paid for] that are available to UK farmers, it must run into the hundreds. Does any other business sector have such a support network/system available?

I guess not.

I presume most of it gets paid for from the EU/UK RDP. So advisers and DEFRA employees getting paid to regurgitate the same old advice (to be fair, some of it is useful).

Personally I would prefer it if they gave the cash direct to farmers rather than the advisers.

The number of farm consultants, advisers, inspectors and 'land managers' is about to explode. The new proposed 'environmentally based' subsidy structure demands their services be employed by all farms who need access to the 'subsidy'. All livestock farmers will, because they will need new audited manure, fertiliser, 'environmental' and other detailed plans and proof of their implementation. Things such as the manure storage volume required, gas retrieval and utilisation, time limits on spreading, wildlife sanctuaries will all have to be planned and the bulk paid for by the farmer with a proper element of subsidy. Say they give 40% support for all these things, the cost of farming is already increased by that 40% or more, plus the farmer has to pay the 60%.
What with the very high likelihood of a hard brexit by 2021 if Conservatives are given a majority in the next parliament, with largely tariff free imports of animal products, this will probably kill off the livestock farming industry and cripple grain farming in the UK for decades to come.

Looking on the bright side, all will be sunny and a bright future awaits... I wish!
