food production sucks....farming is lovely if you don't have rely on it to pay the bills

Certainly every single weather event has been the opposite of what we needed.
Bogged down top dressing in early spring.
Then drought knadgered crop growth and grass reseeds.
Then the wettest winter barley and OSR harvest I’ve known in July.
Now it just won’t rain at all to save the OSR we’ve sown.
Rubbish output prices, high costs.
Looked at a set of worn out dual wheels.
£3000 FFS.
Yes this year it sucks big time.
Bogged down top dressing in early spring.

Not been to bad, a bit wet to start with after turn out then it got dry and we made some silage/haylage easy, got a bit wet for hay but got it in between times, loads of grass about now for the cows and sheep, meant to be nice for next week which will put some life back in it 
All I can say is thank god the dry spell broke, Would have been a long summer without grass growth.
Yes, I was thinking today where is the incentive to invest in our farms. May as well tootle along keeping risk to a minimum. Even running new fangled equipment with electronics is a lottery of big bills. At least a stick can be cut from the hedge and a dog can turn out useless so you have to run yourself.

ive had plenty of useless machines more so this last few years as I cant mend the electronics with a hammer or a welder but ive never had a useless dog and for that I give thanks cos theve all given me great pleasure as friends and pets or occassionally as useful contributors as guard dogs or even able to sit in a gap when moving stock and in return theve had a wonderful life just following me around to see what the silly fecker is going to do next but on the farm side ive not yet given up the challenge and nor do I intend to though am now more going round poking things with a stick ,ho hoAll I can say is thank god the dry spell broke, Would have been a long summer without grass growth.

If/when I win the euro millions tonight I would definitely blow most of it on my own big chunk of England.

Yeah probably.Farming always sucks it's just that some years it sucks more than others, but would we really do anything else.
We've always had the weather to deal with - nothing new there. But what grinds us down is the drip drip, i.e water torture, of new regulations, which means that they
are loading the dice in their favour. They definitely are making us unecessary to modern life.

Does farming "suck" compared to everything else or is this just a venting thread?
Remember it's not compulsory and (according to threads on here) there are thousands of jobs out there that pay a fortune.
Why not sell up and do them?
