What do folks use to fatten cattle?

currently on home grown barley milled up with protein and molasses added. It works but it’s not cheap.

what does everyone else use?

KW Alternative seeds? Is there other similar companies out there selling such stuff?

or something else entirely?

Be a job to beat your own cereal based ration with bought in protein concentrate tbh.

There’s nothing cheap now. Barley pot ale syrup and a bit of silage used to be the cheapest thing. You aren’t far away from that
Waste veg is probably the only thing I can think of but that’s a location and in the know thing .

We feed home mixed barley, molasses and protein plus maize and silage

Nothing cheap anyway.spoke to the KW lad a few times but decided we are best to just go with what were using now.

Guess it depends on what barley price is going to do though.is it going back to £300?

Not really the right land for that job and taking land away from cereal production tightens straw supplies further

Barley, bought in protein, sometimes a few homegrown beans, wheat straw.
Not cheap, but fattens them well, only need grain roller and loader bucket and ad-lib hopper.
Quick, easy, and straight forward.

Im thinkimg silage is dear for feeding cows …. Straw might be cheaper and allow more stock to be kept on silage ground ?

We’re tight on silage this time and been feeding cows outside for a couple weeks now so alternating it with straw with a couple buckets mollases chucked on it the night before.

I’ve fed straw with a bit urea molasses it works maybe put them back onto silage near calving

Mine just licked the mollases off the straw

A lot of the big feedlots seem to be near those Etha plants

Some one i know was buying some sort of molasses in ibc they had a water pump and made a large needle and injected straw bales with mollases type stuff . I thought it no bad idea .

Our round bales we just sit them can style and Chuck it on top and let it soak in overnight.

Used to split sucklers up years ago ones in good condition upon housing had molasses on round bale barley straw poorer cows went on good silage.
Worked well.
Two drums of molasses soaked down through bale placed on ends.
