I think you need the stock on farm. You'll have to confirm the amount of sheep on farm in the application.

I applied for a snacker last round but didn't have any sheep. It is to feed dairy x calves in a predominantly grass fed system. I had to go back and forth explaining to them before mine was excepted.

Doesn't look like open dates have been published yet
What a helpful web page... Would be nice if we could tag Janet Hughes would be a good question to ask her or anybody at defra... As if it isn't already complex enough, they can't even be bothered to tell us WHEN we might be able to ask them to maybe give us some money... Absolute joke.

I was told yesterday by a friend who is an agent that the intended opening date was next week but it may not happen as they have a backlog of last year's claims to pay out on so it may be delayed until they've cleared it, possibly March 🤔

As I understand it you can only have one live application at a time with RPA and we’re busy with fencing and hedging at the moment so seems I couldn’t apply for anything else till that’s sorted and it sounds like the hedging claims are dragging.

Looking through it, they've changed payment terms which may be an issue if you were used to looking for opportunities where grant items could be bought for less than their guide amounts:

2023 - 'Regardless of how much you pay for an item, you will receive the grant amount listed, whether it is less or more than you paid.'

2024 - '
The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) will pay you a grant amount of 50% towards either:

  • the average cost of the item – if an item costs you the same or more than the expected average cost in this list
  • the actual cost you pay for the item– if an item costs you less than the average cost in this list '
I'm not sure this is a good thing as could encourage supplier price inflation or creative accounting to maximise grant funding.

We did our hedge planting (only about 700m) mid December, I didn't want our application to get tangled up with xmas holidays so applied on 4/1, it was paid 18/1, I was quite impressed with that (y) (I've applied for payment in 3 goes, 1st fence line summer last year, hedge in Jan and second fence line nearly done so will apply for payment in a few weeks)

Most items cost more than the average price anyhow?

Hadn’t got around to studying the terms yet but thats upset me. I’d spotted something I could earn myself very good money from (& I wanted anyway). Oh well, looks like they’ve come out on top again because most of the other things are far more expensive than their average cost. Still, any money is better than none.

Trouble is now we’re been told what we can and can’t buy with the money and the conditions that come with it.

in the past we were just given the money and could spend it how we saw fit.

grant items are ok if it’s sumat you need and it fits the criteria otherwise for a lot of folks there of little benefit
