Field roller with spikes., watsons

Has anyone got those types and do they help drainage, do they help the ground dry quicker

I have had one for 3 years. The main aim is to get air into the soil and break any surface pan usually caused by cattle poaching. It won't do the job of a flat roller smoothing out bumpy ground.

I looked at the Alstrong but it was quite a bit dearer. Probably stronger built than the Watson but I feel the Watson is plenty strong enough for what is needed.

Better off with a panbuster. The difference they make is easy to see

Just take a minute to think about what they do.

They make a hole or slit in the soil, as they do not remove any soil (like a sports field corer does) they must make this hole by forcing soil aside- ie causing further compaction.

If you drive a stake into the ground, does the soil around the stake become more compactor or less?

I have one, use it instead of flat roller, works well on our peat land as it tends to get poached on the backend. Also on the heavier land when it's dry it helps get rid of surface poaching. Like all soil engaged equipment timing is everything.

When you tramp ground with cattle and leave it full of holes to hold water = bad thing.
When you pull a large heavy thing around a field and leave holes in it to hold water = good thing.
I'm confused.
As said before we have done half fields before as a trial, waste of time.

If used at the correct time (and timing is key) the blades create shattering fissures that radiate out from the hole - if you test dig the holes weeks after you can clearly see the grass roots filling those fissures. If you do it at the wrong time (wet/soft) you will make a compacted slot that does little or nothing.
The Aerworx/Watson/Allstrong type of machines are, I am told by people who's opinions I respect, the only type tat work proerly as you need the weight of a water filled drum to 'punch' the blades into the ground when it is dry enough for the fissuring to occur. We have an aerworx which we use ourselves and see benefits in sward damage in the top 3-4 inches - any deeper and the panbuster is what is required.
