finding decent employees - its not easy

Finding someone with background in agriculture and have skills to work off farm in small groundworks business ie concrete, hedgecutting, fencing, soft landscaping etc.

The issue for us is finding someone to fill the roll otherwise we are buggered. Had the good, bad and the ugly in the past but getting harder and harder. Open to rates but not a lot of choice around here. Got to be reliable, safety conscious, drug free etc..... Full time/self employed etc.

Very hard to find , maybe easier someone who has the construction skills , but an interest in farming , but I guess that way it's higher rates

What's your nearest college with an Ag course? Contact them and see?

Try an apprentice? Bit of paperwork to do but find the right person (as I once did) and it'll help you no end. They are out there...
you cant do this when you need someone on site knowing what they should be doing left on their own in machinery that can kill. Also we do work for blue chip companies if an inexperienced labourer causes an accident then we are out - end of. Different if its based in here on farm but we travel and its tough when just him and sometimes me need to have experience and confidence. Apprentices in construction suit bigger outfits where they have a buddy all the time (carpentry yes). This def not work for a one man band like us. Double our workload.

Also imagine spending years training up from scratch, putting in all the time, training, days out training courses etc to turn around and tell you thanks Im off now.

Unfortunately, been there done that, wrong age, too young and too inexperienced and have leant very little. Sadly the local ag college has little 'ag' in it and is an extension for kids that have failed the system to do anything.

I agree think this is the best way forward. Someone switched on but experienced with tractors on the road can be taught to hedge cut. I don't think it works the other way around unless they have been brought up in a home where construction business took place.
