First estimates for 2019 UK wheat and barley production show wheat up by 20.1% on the year at 16.3 million tonnes and barley up by 25.6% at 8.2m/t.
Wheat production is above the five-year average (2014-2018) of 15.2m/t. Barley output is also above the 2014-2018 average of 6.9m/t.
“Varying yields were seen in 2018 resulting in below average production,” states Defra, in presenting the new ‘first estimates’. “Provisional results for 2019 show higher production than 2018 and this change is consistent across regions of the UK. Note that these results may be subject to change as more data is collected.”
Full UK provisional results including yield and area data for wheat and barley, along with results for the remaining cereal and oilseed rape crops, are due to be published on Thursday this week, 10 October 2019.
