Behind is best. I have 2 led lights, 1 facing each way about 50 cm back from the middle of the 24 m boom. It's a big improvement on the tractor cab lights, but the view of the spray pattern for the last 3 m of boom isn't that great. The lights are plenty powerful enough, it's just that there is a limit to how far back you can mount the lights without them being too vulnerable. (The further back they are the better they light the whole spray pattern.)
I tried blue led's but found them to be no better than the white ones.
