Flybe, climate change and Boris

Anyone else surprised by how easily Boris and co. caved in and did a deal to help Flybe?

Really upset the Environmental lobby and, by most accounts Flybe's business model (flying relatively few people fairly short distances) is never going to be a winner, whereas the Govt. could easily have let them go (like Thomas Cook) and said the economic and environmental case to support them wasn't there.

Perhaps this is a signal that the Green lobby isn't going to have much sway at Westminster.

See rival airlines are objecting!

Radio 5 had an interview with the South West Development Corp Chief Exec (or similar) saying how vital it is that business people can fly from Newquay to London as it's quicker than a train. As the Cornish economy seems to rely almost exclusively on farming and tourism, I do wonder how many "business people" actually use the service. I actually work for a Cornish based, national company-no air travel but lots of Skype meetings and conference calls. However OH works for a Local Authority and her Head of Dept lives in Hampshire-fly down on Monday, fly home on Friday, with a taxi at each end of course-all paid for by the Council taxpayer!

Top and bottom of it is that everyone talks about saving the Earth from global warming, but if it means taking an hour or two longer to get where you want to go, that's too big a price to pay!

Someone on the radio now saying flying is OK if you don't take heavy luggage or have lots of stopovers and don't travel business class!

Have you taken any land out of production from last autumn?
