I imagine when someone 'folows' you, they do so because they like what you post, or they could simply be a stalker

so if you're following someone shouldn't you get an alert or summat that they've posted

No, if you click your own user name ( i am using laptop, may be different on other devices)

Along the top of the page you should see 'your news feed' this then shows you the posts that those you stalk have made.
