Food Industry letter to Gove

Real representatives, representing real people, running real businesses, employing real people, generating real wealth, generating real tax income for the government, making their views known.

Risk takers whose businesses have been thrown into deep uncertainty, and who are genuinely now worried about the road ahead.

Risk takers who have been told by leading Brexiteer Boris Johnson “f@*k business”.

Risk takers who have been told by Rees Mogg, that it may take fifty years for any benefit to accrue to Britain.

Yes, many people out there now are really, really worried about how all of this is panning out.

"Those signing this letter represent the four UK Farming Unions and 71 leading food businesses with a collective turnover of over £92bn and employing over 925,000 people across the UK. We have a bold and ambitious vision for our industry; one where competitive, profitable and progressive farming and food businesses deliver an increasing proportion of the nation’s needs for high quality, safe, affordable food to British people, as well as expanding into new export markets. We know that we have the strong support of consumers who value the British provenance as well as the daily care we take to manage the environment and safeguard the integrity of our crops, animals and production processes."

And the last bit about seasonal Labour .. so it's all about the large processors as usual at the expense of everyone else.

Typical NFU .. couldn't give a toss about the small & medium farms & workers.

Small and mediums have nothing to worry about, don’t you think! JRM and Boris taking care of their interests above all else!!

Facts are though, it’s the small and medium businesses and farms, who will fare out worst in a no deal scenario.

Weatherspoons et al, will do rather nicely.

Irish farms & Processors are about to lose their best market ..

UK farms & Processors can smell a business opportunity.

You could argue that the real risk takers are those who are forging ahead, looking for new markets outside the EU, which according to some 'experts' seems to be growing less quickly than some other regions.

Just the opposite with JRM he is for full on free trade, low regulations and zero tariffs. Good for the money men, bad for everyone else.

Indeed. Currently British beef and cheese producers cannot compete with their Irish counterparts.
How they will have a better landscape once their market is opened to S America etc, is beyond me.

Dream on man. Dream on.
Brexit is about more cheap food as one of its primary goals.
Less regulation, less inspections, no quotas. Few quid thrown to the hill men to keep the place tidy.

Great for consumers.
There's infinitely more of them than us.
Jeez.
They might even be able to buy twice as much to donate to food banks........which we farmers will be using.
Win win.

The future of the UK is for the people of the UK to define.

Not a few jaded people in Ireland with a chip on their shoulder.

We'll have the system WE want not what YOU want.

What inspections and regulations within the EU actually work? A massive number clearly don`t and these are only the ones that we hear about. Another piece of expensive , disfunctional BS.

So, you according to your outburst a few posts back, more regulation, more inspections, more tariffs and quotas on top of all of that.
Pray tell me, how Brexit will deliver that?????????

Some on that list have production facilities in the EU. Their main worries are hold up in exports back to UK.

The policing and upholding of food standards in the UK is a lot more stringent and effective than it is in the EU. They may be the same rules but rules are only effective if they are applied.

You said it, they are risk takers who took advantage of a situation and did not read the signs. Over the last few years they have profited from the situation while others definitely have not, quite the reverse in some cases. There is always a payoff at the end of the day and now the time has come. They will have to become more flexible and adapt or go and look for another job.
