The ramblers on this morning pushing for people to register forgotten rights of way.
More access more sheep worrying more poachers. And worse for wildlife. Disturbing nesting birds.
Luckily we only have 2. As a lot were deregulated in the 1950s .can they claim these to be put back on the map?

I was led to believe that if a footpath hadn't been used for 10 yrs or more then it could be shut down but it might just be wishful thinking and not fact

I see a chap on our local FB page has brought this to peoples attention, urging them to look for old footpaths using a link called , don’t loose your way.
we already have a number of footpaths including one through the yard, but if you use the tool on their link, it shows up lots more that were used when there were old properties scattered around. If they insisted on opening these up, there are two of my arable fields that wouldn’t be worth cropping as I’d be spraying footpaths criss crossing them .

I think there is a council related site you can register your land on that then prevents footpaths being opened up on the land that is registered. I’m sure it a ‘section 31(6)’, which we should all be using to prevent new rights of way. I seem to remember it protected the farmer’s interests for 20 years

trouble is most of these forgotten paths where only created for locals to walk to work, deliver the post / bread etc.

not for everyday folk to walk their dogs.
Is a public foot path not a playground.
About time someone took it to court about walking dogs on them. You cant take a horse on a footpath or a pet sheep. Why a dog.
Should be banned imho

Dogs are allowed as a "normal accompaniment." Unfortunately some owners think it is OK to let the dogs run all over the place.Or wander where there is no footpath. "We're not doing any harm," Well I suppose not, especially since there was a shoot all over the place last week! But I still say frostily that that is not where the footpath goes.

Legally a footpath/bridlepath is a highway, just the same as the lane at the bottom of your drive and it is only an accident of history that they are not also covered in tarmac. they can only be removed or even moved by legal action.

Back in 1980/90s a parish tried to reorganise its footpath system, removing cross field paths and re routing to the field edges and removing paths where they were criss-crossing a field. All the landowners agreed, the Council gave it officer time and it went to a public enquiry as it was fought by the Ramblers. It was thrown out on a technicality and there was not the money or the heart to re-submit.
