Atm out of 390 ewes I can count about 25 at most atm, treating them as I can get them atm but hoping that number is still 25 or there abouts at weaning so it’s a viable amount too cull then as you say I’ll start as soon as they’re lame culling them … problem before was I always had too many lame too make it a viable business move as I’d of killed 1/4 the flock at once

Thought you had more sheep than that tbh. The Alpha (@Electricfencer) will be most unimpressed.

Hi
I am a final year vet student researching sheep lameness.
If anyone gets a spare 10minutes and would be able to fill out this survey looking at Farmers opinions on the AHDB 5 point plan to reduce sheep lameness, it would be really appreciated.
Thank you
Completed.

I'm not a farm owner, but I run my own flock on rented ground, so ticked farm owner box.

I've got some lame cull ewes and lambs which I've got Draxxin to give, but I've also gotten a bottle of Footvax... intention was to do the worst with Draxxin and the rest with Footvax and hopefully clear them all up so they can sell once they put fettle on

Is it ok to give both Draxxin and Footvax to the same ewe/lamb or will the ABs counter the vaccine?

we use it on all shearlings we sell , if only to give them some protection in their new homes (used at half rate ) , have very few limpers in the ewe flock these days , any lame at weaning go on a trip to sedgemore , was once told 10% of your ewes gives you 80% of the management work , whilst i may not agree on those %, a bad footed ewe will infect everything else , just get them gone and replace

Have just given all our ewes the first dose. Second in a month. Only bought in ewes will be footvaxed in future.

Hopefully it makes a difference. Constant footbathing and treating lame sheep is hard work!

Having a right carry on with foot rot in our lambs this time since weaning. Started off with scald and went from there. Been through footbath 5 times in 6 weeks. Yows were bad as well for a spell but got on top of them for now.

In other folks experience how much difference will footvax make to lameness in lambs?

Footvax worked well on my sheep and they were bad. It didn't work well the first time I used it. The difference the second time was that I also put down lime in gateways, in spots under trees where they lay, in the handling pen and in front of water troughs.

Last season I had quite a time with the lambs and foot rot. I had to inject a lot several times with LA Alamycin. In October the lambs were injected with Micotil to suppress the infection with a view to starting Footvax.

However this did not go to plan as there was none to buy and ended up still having to inject the problem ones with Alamycin.

It wasn’t until January 2023 that I could buy Footvax, which solved the problem and none have gone lame since. The gimmers that I kept are doing well and are now on the maintenance dose. The remainder of the flock have just started with Footvax.

Now this years lambs are having problems and I will probably start vaccinating the ones I intend to keep or don’t get finished.

Surely that could just be the lime though?

Never used foot vac just cull anything that seems to struggle with bad feet more than once
