Ford 5000 Voltage regulator smoking

Help please!!

As above really, after servicing the tractor I noticed that the fuse like object on the back of the voltage regulator box was smoking/smouldering.
Thinking that it had had its chips I replaced it with a new one, but this one does it too!

If I remove the two wires from the back/end of the dynamo then I don't get any smoking but obviously the charging/ ignition light comes on.

If I just replace the wire onto the centre of the end of the dynamo I don't get any smoking and the charging light is still on.
However, when I also replace the wire that goes on to the outside of the end of the dynamo then within a minute I get smoke again.

When the tractor is running at about 1000ish rpm I get about 1.5v between the two terminals on the back of the dynamo.

Can anyone shed any light as to what's going wrong? Is my dynamo knackered or is it possible that given the age of the tractor the wiring loom and the wire insulation has failed and I've got two wires rubbing and causing a short between the dynamo and the regulator?

Any help gratefully recieved.

Thank you

Poor connection somewhere causing too much resistance 'further down the line ?'

How sound are the connections from the dynamo?

Could be damage done anyway so wiring loom replacement would on the cards if a wire or is 2 'cooked.'

Dynamo wouldnt cost big bucks either?
Just random suggestions really , but wouldnt want him to catch fire of course.

But Should jabbing the tester around different places I guess.

It's normal for that resistor to get hot and if it get's oil on it smoke will be evident, check with multimeter set to 20v dc across battery terminals should show 12v +, start engine about 1000-1200 rpm check again should show 13-14v depending on charge state of battery if that's ok everything should be ok ,if new reg has been fitted check if 11 or 22amp they are different, quick check on a dynamo is remove both wires d and f run engine and use small screwdriver touch both terminals on dynamo should be a spark, if you ever fit or think dynamo has lost it's polarity remove f wire and use small jumper wire touch f on dynamo and live on battery you should see small spark do not keep wire on it just quick flash re-connect f wire and re-check charge rate on battery....

there could be dead short at control box causing current to go to dynamo turning it into motor but it can't turn because of fan belt resulting in burnt out tractor
If or rather when it does burn out I would like to buy it

Get someone to remove all that, and fit an alternator. I know it won't be original.....but.....
Chucked at least a dozen duff regulators in the skip a few years ago. Wasn't a great idea even when new.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, its currently being examined by someone more electrically minded than me, I have passed on all of your ideas to help.

Many thanks
