Remove cover [big] under gear levers and check lever not loose in aly housing, the lever is retained by a grub screw and Loctite, if ok remove cab floor mat and tin cover check sleeve flange socket head bolts very often come loose if so remove two bolts and check flange they can bow again if so under nut at back of sleeve unscrew sleeve until you see a small pin, remove this and cable will come off unscrew sleeve remove flange and carefully straighten in a vice [ once upon time could be bought separately] refit and just nip flange bolts so sleeve can be turned until lever is halfway in slot then loctite flange bolts test. if ok nip locknut on sleeve.

Quite possibly yes. Exact same thing happened on our 7840 many years ago, was the cable at fault. If I remember right the housing cup they screw into can break, letting them work ok one way but then be at fault going the other way. Definitely not a hard or expensive job to worry about if that’s the problem. Definitely sounds like it.

Thanks chris. Do you mean the housing for the forward and back leave goes into

On our one basically the threaded adjustable end piece at the bottom of the cable had broken, causing issues 1 way only, I suppose it would be described as the cable housing yes, basically if you trace the cable to the end furthest away from the forward and reverse lever that was where the issue was on our one, hopefully it is the same on yours and a nice simple fix. You can also adjust the cable here aswell.

The reason the sleeve edge breaks is because the flange warps and that itself is caused by the retaining socket head bolts coming loose if Fords had the flanges made of thicker metal instead of ally it would not happen but then again the cables were bought in, l have sometimes fitted two flanges with longer bolts, but as i stated previous the f/r lever itself can often come loose in the ally housing due to wear and the grub screw not being able to hold the lever, if yours is like that mark centre position of lever then drill a small indentation and use a longer grub screw with strong loctite.
