Ford Ranger Ad Blue

Got a new Ford Ranger on the fleet and it seems to be drinking ad blue. It’s a 3.2 5cyl. Was under the impression that ad blue on several vehicles only needs topping up annually. Q5 we have only needs it at service intervals.

I got a 3.2 wildtrak in june and was told that the adblue would do 6000 miles on a tank full, the warning came up at 4500 miles and said 1650 miles to empty but I filled it up because the message came up every time it was started.

My 2.2 drank Ad-Blue for the first few thousand miles, it's now doing around 5500-6000 on a tank compared to under 3000 initially.

Consumption should be load-dependent. The higher the load on the engine, the more fuel and adblue used per mile and the more adblue used relative to fuel.

The Ford engine Range is becoming outclassed now with each passing year and the new engines, already used in Transit and some cars, can't come a day too soon. The current pickup Diesel engines are both unrefined and thirsty compared to the best of the rest. I compare my 2.2 with the 2.2 Honda diesel fitted to my CRV, which has identical power and torque figures but which has been discontinued for about 2 years now and replaced with a similar power 1.6 litre unit.
Anyhow the Honda 2.2 is in a different league when it comes to a consistent power delivery, outright performance, refinement and fuel consumption. The Ranger does weigh half a ton more of course but I take that into account.

The Ford engine does the job but it is absolutely nothing to get exited about. It has sufficient power in both four and five cylinder variants but with a manual box the flat-spots in power and lethargy off the line from idle are starkly brought into focus. It hasn't adapted to Euro5 emissions well and probably uses more adblue than most to get through Euro 6.

Honda didn't try to adapt its 2.2 for Euro6 of course, preferring to redesign the engine completely to comply. Ford is doing the same but in the interim has adapted its 2.2 to comply. The new 2.0 promises to be a better engine altogether and the smaller capacity V6 takes over from the current 3.2 5 cylinder, which should be another significant step forward. Both will be well proven by the time they hit the all-new Ranger which should reach the UK in early 2019. The 2.0 is already used in Transit and the 3.0 V6 is well known as the power plant for the Range Rover Sport and Discovery4 and 5.

Thanks @Cowabunga Useful to know.
Ranger has done around 6k now so getting run in. I think it had used a whole tank by about 3000mls? Some towing involved but only about half the weight of what it’s capable of. Now that it’s reached 6k has done another tank of adblue. Annoying thing is, it buzzed to say 495 miles left in tank, then buzzed again at every 5 mile interval. Not a great feature!
You don’t get that with diesel so not sure why the warning is so regular. Every 50 Miles would be enough.

Done 5500 miles in my 2.2 Ranger and not had to fill it yet. Can you get it to tell you how much Ad blu is left? Will try to look later.

That's the same usage my 2.2 was having, it's now done just over 11k and settled down. Agree with the buzzer being annoying!
