so a neighbour has had a health and safety audit and been told something that has completely passed me by unless anyone can show me different, he’s been told you have to renew the forklift test every 5 years, days training and test apparently, did mine 22-23 years ago and thought that was it. Anyone with any light on this please?

Who told him, are they actually qualified to say so ?

When I did my forklift test years ago with the local ATB it was meant to be a one off qualification with no expiry date.
Now, If you do a course through Lantra then it needs renewing every 5 years.
However I was told that if you do it through City and Guilds then there's no expiry date still ?

Do you actually need to have a test from a recognised training body? I thought you just needed to have been trained by a competent person. Or has that changed?

P.S. I would presume that someone who has their handler test/certificate was a competent person, and thus able to train someone else.

That I don’t know but it’s been enough for him and a few other locals to book up on a course, if I wasn’t going on holiday next week they wanted me to join them, I’m not saying I won’t do it I just hate all this crap where they seem to change the rules to generate more money out of people who already struggling

Did the Lantra loader course 3 weeks ago, and asked the trainer how long the test is valid for. His reply was that it's a bit of a grey area, in that there isn't a requirement for re-testing if you can demonstrate that you use a loader regularly, and are therefore practicing the required skills.

Edit - just checked the Lantra certificate which arrived yesterday, and it states:
"Refresher training is recommended within five years to keep your skills current"

So not mandatory, but 'recommended'.

So I’ve just found my ticket, it’s an ATB landbase book/ticket, I did it in 1996, would that mean I’m ok??

Mines the same.
There's no expiry date on them, no legal requirement for redoing it.
However it's a good idea to have ongoing training as an employee.
Being self employed I'm not doing it.
NFU looked into this for me about 5 years ago, there is no requirement for a ticket if you have long established use.

Basically there is no expiry on it, So I have took the attitude that I have been trained which was the requirement at that time.
I haven't done a refresher with Lantra as I didn't want to get on the band wagon of having to shell out money every 5 years!
May be I am wrong ?
It's a bit like the spray test. If you took pa2 before 199? you got covered for pa2, pa4s, pa4g and pa6. Now these are all separate modules. £££

So that would suggest yes, to stay up to date, even though I use every day  next question is what happens if you fail your so called refresher :nailbiting:

I would imagine that anyone who has passed their forklift test is a competent person, and therefore would be able to offer instruction to someone else. Maybe even self-certify your own refresher course, cas long as you have studdied and documented all the points as set out in the HSE document.

That's only my own opinion. I guess paying for a recognised refresher course would most easily demonstrate the box ticking exercise.
