Hi guys, I'm in the market to buy a framing nailer but I am not sure what to buy. This is a tool that I would be using from time to time. I am curious about what to look for?

Thanks

First up you need to decide if you’re going cordless or pneumatic. It’s a faff needing an air compressor and line but this might not be a problem in your particular circumstance. If you’re going cordless are you going to choose gas or battery? Gas can be a problem in cold temperatures, and you need to buy gas canisters. Personally I would go battery and have a DeWalt I’m very happy with. HiKOKI is well respected. You prolly won’t go far wrong with the other big mid range prosumer brands - Milwaukee, Makita etc. but no experience. You could go cheap with Ryobi, Draper etc. Ryobi has evolved into a decent low cost option and you do say it’s for occasional use.

Take a look at this best framing nailer-

I have used a Paslode Nailer 905600 nailer for a long time. It's more suited to production framers and have had good luck with them.
