don't people usually shorten the chains by putting a bolt in them?Just whatever it takes to stop the racket and a little bit more to allow for the chain stretching.

So the hammer should be as close as possible to the barrel - but without actually touching it? I wasn't sure if there was a manufacturers recommendation of an inch or something like that - to allow for stretch.
