So the hammer should be as close as possible to the barrel - but without actually touching it? I wasn't sure if there was a manufacturers recommendation of an inch or something like that - to allow for stretch.

On a new machine, the chains can be 2" from the barrel. This will allow you to do several hundred loads before the "hammer" touches the sides.

However a rotorspread gets more efficient the closer they get to the side , because you can empty more of your load.

On my last Fraser Muckmaster, I cut 2 links off the rotor end of the chain,refitted with a new bolt and turned the flail head around so the square corners would dig in better.

When these started to touch I replaced with new chains and flails.Should have done this sooner because the performance was much better with a heavier head.
