Not missing growing oilseed rape, looking at keeping things simple with wheat, barley and beans, which of below do people think is best:

1) spring beans, winter wheat, winter wheat, spring barley, winter barley

2) spring beans, winter wheat, spring barley, winter barley, winter wheat

3) spring beans, winter wheat, winter barley, spring barley, winter wheat

Heavy and so other break crops very limited IMO. Oilseed at 1.5-1.6t/ac stacks up (just) but weed burden dictates Clearfield. Then got the hassle of slugs and pigeons (and flea beetle)

No digesters nearby, likewise I am not keen following spring barley with wheat, so option 1 is my favoured. Black grass levels manageable, happy with residual control on winter crops

Option 1 but winter beans if available which can always be planted in the spring if conditions dictate and slot a cover crop into the rotation after 2nd WW and before the spring barley. It could be a normal cover or have you got someone local who would want turnips for sheep as that would give you a minimum 1/4 ton acre extra of spring barley following it.

i know its not recommended, but what happens if you grow beans in in 4 instead of in 5? does it make a big difference to disease/nematodes? beans, wheat, winter barley, stubble turnips-spring barley- bck to wheat?

Also, I've never seen a decent wheat after spring barley.

Agree with this. We have a lot of winter barley after spring barley this year which looks total crap too. Here winter barley really needs to be in before the first week of October and often we are cutting laid, brackled spring barley in September and so there is not enough time to be sure we can deal with volunteers. If you are happy ploughing after spring barley then fine...
