Need to plant a hedge to screen garden from farm yard.

cost of 60-90 bare root is about 10% of 30-60 pot grown.

in 3+ years times will anyone know the difference other than my bank account!?

species mostly hornbeam and beech. Going to mix compost and top soil with the them to give a good start.

Whips are cheap as around 50p - £1 each depending on the size. I went for a full native so a good mix of berries and flowers (holly0 Have you worked out the cost per meter think that is going to be a corker of a bill on pot grown. Try Wyevale had amazing quality from them. http://www.wyevalenurseries.co.uk/stock-lists/

Growing wise I think ours is 5 years old around the bungalow. Its full in summer now. The birds are covering it all year so its very appealing to nature. I didnt put beech in. I did use bamboo (I sourced the stronger longer ones from a specialist bamboo store) & tubes for the first 2 years. Im happy with it. We've done miles and miles around the farm but these 2 pieces I planted myself.

If you use good compost and plant really well I didnt water any of mine and lost none even last summer after we did over 3000 whips I was surprised how well they managed. The important thing is to plant the roots correctly and using the tubes does give moisture.

I would absolutely definitely go for good quality bare root if planting now. Mulch if you have it round the stems after planting, and if you have access, get some drip tape and attach it to a tap with a timer. Stops forgetting to water in dry times and far more effective than jetting a hose on them once a week

yeah I seem to have been hoodwinked in thinking pg is better!

plan to dig a trench and back fill with mix of top soil and AD sourced compost. they said to use some root grow and bone meal as well. got soaker hose at the ready, just need to leave the rifle out ready for the hares and deer!

I would not use plastic guards for beech but you must protect with something, a chicken wire fence both sides is the ideal
