Genomic recording of Sheep

Evening, I was hoping some of you might be interested in my Nuffield Report I was lucky enough to travel to NZ and Oz and look at what farmers/scientists are going w.r.t genomic recording and gene testing in sheep.

To anyone thinking about a Nuffield I cannot recommend it enough - it has really changed our outlook on farming.

Excellent report Rob. This doc. should be essential reading for all UK agri. students as part of their animal breeding course.

I am sure if many of TFF readers understood half of the messages you have highlighted on how eBVs work, much of the debates about recording and feeding vs breeding would go away.
Your approach to farm succession/expansion with now having a focussed vision makes for a refreshing read.

Really good report Rob. Agree with GO, if most of the anti eBV producers read your report we would have alot less arguments about them!
Is this the main focus of your talk on the 8th?

Hi Jop,
Focus of the talk wll be explaining to young farmers what we do with recordng and eBV's on my farm, and try to get them to see the value in it. It will touch on the work we are doing with gBV's as well, but not in huge detail - I only have 15mins or so and so I thought i would send it trying to convince them eBV's are a good thing!

Very interesting read. Amazing the work that has already been done and the potential that is there for stock improvement in the future. Good luck with your work in the future.

Massive potential in using genomics for selection. Especially work being done in aus on eating quality, zinc content, vitamin enriched meat.

Also thought tims chat on how he got into sheep was good.

Seems to me that it is obvious that the potential of genomics is huge ---however, as always, this must be balanced against cost.
