Where in Alberta are you @Blaithin ? I worked for a summer on a dairy farm near Lacombe and was friends with a dairy farm near Ponoka.
I worked from April to Nov so didn't experience the winter months, quite glad I didn't with some of the stories they used to tell me about it. Although a bit of me wants to go back to experience it

I’m south east of Red Deer. Probably only 1.5 or 2 hours from where you were.

Not sure about north. They were fairly wet so could have some shortages due to not getting stuff off and could have quality issues.

Generally they’re a higher quantity, lower quality, area.

Part of my attempt to eat more meat means I have to cook more meat so this week I’ve been prepping steak. 45 minutes sous-vide and then sear it in my trusty cast iron pan and I’m set for the day! It’d be really hard to go wrong I think.

And I have fresh jerky to tide me over between steaks!

Warnings are always red; watches are yellow; special weather statements are grey.

Not all the red are cold warnings. West coast is probably snowfall/storm related. Just the rest of the country is in the freezer

Do the cattle just pull/rub lumps off the frozen bale and munch it down anyway?

You can see the bowl at the top where it wasn’t frozen right through. Think it is now though.

They gave up and went to the hay instead. It’ll probably thaw enough for them to eat next week.

Farmer in Manitoba was harvesting his cornfield at the beginning of the month and chased away a bear hibernating in the middle of it. Ended up finding two teenie, tiny cubs.

I thought it strange when my friends at Ponoka had an axe next to their feed bunk instead of a pitch fork. Then they told me it was to break up the frozen bales ?

Behold the power of the Chinook.

Right now it’s -27 and feels like -40. The wind is miserable. I think it might have been warmer in Tuesday when it was -37!

But! The light at the end of the tunnel.
