but the initial cost of the setup tool wise would be 6k tho.

for a while now ive been wondering if id buy a thermal spray transfer gun for shafts (the powder kind) but the cost is massive and im of the thinking that we are now in a throw away society more than a repair one, that unit new from eutectic is about 10k.
nice processes but sky high money unless you were using it every day unfortunately.

There is an alternative to hot dipping if you have something you can't take to the galvanisers and Father Christmas doesn't bring that £6k hot metal spray gun.

For a more modest outlay of about £18 a kilo, you can buy liquid zinc in a can with some weird and wonderful stuff called Zinga. It is almost pure zinc that can be applied by brush or roller and sacrifices before steel just like the hot dipped stuff, although the coating isn't as thick. Metal has to be clean for it to stick.

My last tins came from Bradechem. http://www.bradechem.com/coatings/zinga-coatings/zinga-1kg/

Nearly finished the project now.....

Question is thou.... I've a 3mm sheet of tread plate I want to fix onto it for the floor. Will I be able to cut it to size and weld it on prior to being sent away for galvanising? Or will the fact that I'm welding a flat surface onto those flat bars not be acceptable for the galvanising process? [emoji848]
Or do I cut the tread plate to size and get it galvanised separately then bolt it onto the implement once finished?

Thanks

We blast tvr chassis, then take them to a company locally that flame zinc the complete chassis. Seal it then epoxy prime it and 2 coats of polyurethane paint. This we then offerer a 10 year warranty on for full rebuilds. We have it flame zinc coated over dipping partly due to cost but also because hot dip halv requires holes drilled every where which is time consuming and it could fill with dirt and debris so the structure could fail with out seeing it.

Hot dip, gates, muck spreaders, things that are going to get left out but not dragged on the ground so as to wear through the galv. Things that come into contact with corrosive things like muck, grass, fertiliser etc. Will last longer. You can always have it polyurethane coated over the top of the galv to add another layer of protection.

I would fit the treadplate afterwards. It will warp if welded to your frame.

[emoji106] should I remove the A frame I've welded in (only tacked on) and make brackets up to re-bolt it once I get the transport box from galvanising?
Or will it be fine?[emoji848]

Sorry for the stupid questions[emoji23]

Have you got a galvanizing plant to take it to? You say you're in the south West of Scotland. I'm up in Ayrshire and I take any stuff I want dipped to Highland Galvanisers up in Cumbernauld - bit of a trek but their service is alot better than Scottish Galvanisers in Tradeston, Glasgow. If you are closer to Dumfries then Franklin Steel offer a Galvanizing service (not sure what plant they take stuff to though).

One final thing. Whichever Galvanisers you choose make sure your item to be dipped will actually fit in their dipping tanks. Highlands tank is 1.2m wide x 7m long 3m deep. Scottish Galvanisers tank is only 1.1m wide.

I deal with franklin steel so it'll be Scottish galvanisers. Had barriers and posts done through them b4[emoji1].
Good point about the tank size! It's about 32" high so hopefully that'll go in width ways[emoji120][emoji3]

Franklin Steel in Dumfries are spot on. They managed to order in the beam I needed for my post driver and the solid round bar to make the weight.

I suppose Scottish galvanisers can't mess up gates but they made a right arse of a couple of ATV trailers i sent up - one looked like they dipped it in all the slag that floats to the top of the tank and the 2nd o e they drove into it with a forklift and then dipped it anyway and hoped I'd not notice!

will tread plate stay flat if glavanised on it own or will it warp?

Absolutely not, if you tack some flat bar on edge to it you've got a fighting chance of stiffening it up though.

They do that down here as well, seems par for the course that things get bent - and mixed up, at least you got your own trailers back instead of somebody else's :)
