Getting concerned

Also can't believe the amount of people who seem to have been drilling this week looking on here. In our part of Lincolnshire no drilling has been done around here since the end of October, with only a very small acreage done. We have wheat drilled early October which is up and looks well. Didn't get back drilling till end of October which in hindsight was probably a mistake as it's had so much rain on it, doesn't look like it will come to much. Looking very very patchy emergance... rotted seed, slugs and drill tractor wheelings! Surely there's going to be a lot of drilled crops over the last month which might not make it?

Most of our lands like this, thin limestone so it's either saturated and can't go down or it's bubbling up out the ground. No idea if wht will pop up and rape looks very sick.

Well I’ve been here just 6 years and don’t grow rape but do rotate grass. Anyway, I have never had an issue at all with slugs and didn’t even have anything to throw pellets (other than a 6 cu trailed fert spreader), but now, bloody hell, had to go out and buy a quad, spreader and am non stop spreading. Fields where I’ve never seen a slug. Where do they all come from? Eggs must fall with the rain :nailbiting:

Had an education yesterday.
I was lucky enough to shoot between bottom of Edgehill and Stratford on Avon.
Not at all like at home here, was on easy working ground with pebble stone content, trouble is it was nearly bottomless. Waterlogged and nowhere for water to go. No chance of spraying anything locally that had been drilled early either, by the looks of it.
You do not often stand at a peg and sink past your ankles as you stand there.

Two dry days. Rain. One dry day. Weather warning for next week as it's due to rain for two and a bit days. Even five mm is just sitting on the top now. It's been incessant and looks like it's got more to come. It's all very upsetting. There's challenging, and there's impossible.

I can't see what fun independent agronomist are having either. I have barely spoke to mine and although it hasn't been mentioned yet I don't feel that inclined to pay mine for doing nothing.

A lot will be pinning their hopes on a combination of a half decent spring and an uplift in cereal prices.

I just keep telling myself how good it will be for bg control.

I don’t think I have known a period for so many weather warnings. It’s just depressing

Hi David, welcome to Warwickshire, I'm glad you have seen the nice end of the county. If you come north of Stratford on Avon you will find the proper soil and you can play spot the planted field. That's right it's spot the planted field not fields around here!!! You must of been on some good land if you only got as far as your ankles. I think one or two of the old boys who shoot locally yesterday had to be removed by quad and they were struggling.

I am not concerned as it sort of wastes energy. Can't drill for the foreseeable so forget about it. Can't lift beet now due to a drainage problem but I am working on it. Only so much I can do about it and keep working at trying to make small steps at improvement to move things forward each day. Yes the frost will probably get my beet next, but nothing I can do about that either so again no point worrying. Waste of energy. Keep chipping away at the jobs I can do and there is also time to sit back and review plans.

It's been a kind of enforced sabbatical in a way, not entirely a bad thing. Time to reflect rather than constantly being caught up in the daily anxiety of the relentless routine.

Are you anticipating a Labour victory 12th December and a weaker £? I've sold a tonne/acre of what I've planted.

I think we have had it worse than others realise here in Lincs and Yorks. A lot of land is now resembling marsh if not completely submerged in places. It would be a supreme optimistic who would sell anything for next year's harvest in this area IMO. Nothing drilled here. Anything that has been drilled looks to be struggling or hasn't even made it through.

Yes. I think anyone who has got some done is very lucky. Take a trip up to this part of the world. It's a real big mess. Stubbles, ploughed or min till it's no different. It won't dry now. The only drilling will be on a hard frost and that's pretty hit and miss. If it didn't rain until the longest day we would still be over average rain and still have wet ground. Yuuuuuk.

got far more concerns about sowing remainder, crop survival of whats in the ground and any possible yield in relation to costs to bother about who wins the election If it doesnt soon dry up. Neither things can I do anything about though im not going to sell now what could be 1/2 my harvest
