Getting started

Hi, bit of a long shot here but nevertheless,
I’m currently Based in south Cornwall, don’t come from a farming background or have any previous experience.
Have a genuine desire to learn the livestock trade ( beef) in particular, have wanted to since I was a kid but thought tht as I wasn’t from a farming family it wasn’t possible.
Have spoken to a local agricultural college and they Said my best path to gettin goin is an apprenticeship. I’m 31 and willing to start at the bottom like they’ve said as this is the only job I want to do. Has anyone got any advice, know of anywhere down here looking for an apprentice herdsman, or just some info on pitfalls to avoid etc.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

careful how you word that woodson..... 'livestock trade' sounds like you want to become a dealer.

Yes there's work in livestock.
More so in dairy, as cows gotta be milked every day, whereas beef farms with cattle at grass won't have as much stockwork through the summer.
Ask around, look at ads in MVF etc, knock on doors.
There might very well be someone looking st this thread!

What have you been up to in your 31 years?
If you lack experience, you'll not be making much coin initially.

Tread carefully.... you may well find yourself being used instead of taught.
Contact your local Auctioneers who may allow you to spend a couple of days in the market helping out and getting used to farmers and the system. You will build up relationships with farmers and will soon find some prepared to give you a chance and a few days work .
