they look well enough, grass or no grass,
funny cattle will be more happy with dried up stuff and the sun on there backs than they are with lush looking grass when its been wet and dull and cold for ages, 2012 we put the cows in some really nice looking grass and they all ran round it once made a mess and came back to the gate shouting their heads off

We’ve had 500mm less than 2018 so far 2018 was a wet spring and not a dry autumn either.
perhaps my management has improved then :ROFLMAO:
we have made more bales and had grass to feed for longer with about a sixth of the fert
from what I can remember we had a wet cold spring that change very quickly to very dry in 2018 and the grass never got going before it dried out, this year we had a very good growing spring

We had more rain in Jan 18 than we’ve had all year so far this year. Only Feb this year have we had more than 50mm and 35 of that fell in 4 hrs.

Looking like another 2 weeks at least of hot and dry weather coming.
The little bit of rain over the last week has helped slightly.
Sheep are happy enough but finding some grass to wean the lambs on to could be a challenge!

We are feeding some of the cattle now, still a bit to go at for a couple groups, sheep are ok with grass in front of them.
no rain in the two week forecast for here.

we usually put our dry cows onto standing hay, not a chance this year, back to straw and nuts.
even if it rains, there won't be 'deferred' grazing, it will be lush and green, and ideal for milk fevers.

had a little bit of rain, and with longer nights, and dews, things are beginning to move again, thankfully. We have just had a TB test, brought all the stock back home, and are keeping them in for a bit, to give the grass, a chance to get going again, not something we would normally do.

Very little improvement here even though we had rain.
The fields I usually wean lambs on to are poor. I expected a lot more fresh growth by now.
I am surprised how slow the growth is too, here have been lucky enough to have 80 mm , its greened up with lush grass but seems to be slowing down, only a few inches high mind, soon go

80 ml is nothing, to what is required to get back to 'normal', hardly touched the sides, as they say. That is the worrying bit though, we need 2 or 3 yrs of well above av rainfall, to recharge the aquifers etc. Add to that, the fact we seem to be having more torrential downpours, than steady rain, which runs off, without benefitting the soil, we probably need 5 or 6 years of above average rainfall.
Or, as some claim, this might be our new normal climate, just as likely it will be a washout few yrs. Its the not knowing, that creates the problems.

But, autumn is coming, nights are getting longer, heavier dews, so grass will slowly get going again, but some decent prolonged rain, should put it into overdrive.
