Go back farming?

Hi lads, I got sick sh!t of college twice so I came to the USA and am currently working in a pub. I got the maximum possible result in the Leaving cert, Irish equivalent of A levels so understandably my parents are a bit pee'd off. I'm making good enough money but I miss the home farm. We have a good enough tillage enterprise at home and go on hire drawing silage and combining, no stock. Turning a nice profit, don't know exact figures but I hate being stuck in a tractor and not being able to go out drinking and having fun with my friends. Being shook around for 20 hours daily for a week at a time is my idea of absolute hell although I do enjoy a couple of days of it.

Pigs or chickens are quite appealing to me but I don't know if there's any money in it, could anyone enlighten me? Another option is cows but I reckon it could go tits up next year but then I know next to nothing about them. I'm considering going working on a big dairy farm but would that be of any relevance to Ireland I don't think so.

I'm fair drunk now been out all day so excuse me if I don't make a lot of sense. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll reply as soon as I get a chance

Tractor work does not seem to appeal to you, livestock takes a lot of commitment, no get rich quick schemes in farming, and college life would seem a doddle on looking back;)

Thanks for replies. I barely remember posting that, spent day in the pub :)
I'm going to travel for a few years first I've decided.
Have to go and talk sh!t about Ireland to big fat f**kers now going to be pretty bad but at least I get good tips certainly a lot more than from farmers. Also more chance of a ride ;-)

Could anyone tell me about pigs or chickens in Ireland profitable or waste of time?

Irish farming appears to be booming again after the major recession following the credit crunch. Much of the UK meat & milk processing has Irish ownership - with a strong £ they are well placed to take a big market share in the next few years while the €uro is still weak.

Note how the big supermarkets now refer to the post horsemeat market as wanting to source beef from the British Isles, not just the UK?

Correction. Irish farming companys appear to be booming. IE . Most of the companys dealing with farm produce seem to be doing well,eg Dairy beef mushrooms.

Dairy farming is the only segment that earns money according to recent farm survey published in last weeks Farmers Journal
