Good news about manure

So what's exactly wrong with this paper. It appears quite interesting and relevant to me regarding the reuse of phosphates found in sewage and manure. :scratchhead:

Farmers have been recycling the nutrients from manure pretty much since farming began.
Yet in recent years livestock have been demonized as the root of all evil in terms of the environment.

Seems to me nothing much wrong with the article as such. Just stating the obvious, then looking for an expensive way of doing something nature can do for you.

Why is it demonising livestock? They are looking principally at the growing separation of crops, livestock and high density populations and the recovery and reuse of phosphates which can be detrimental to aquatic systems.

Sorry didn't mean this is demonizing livestock. Every other report seems to.
Personally I think the growing separation of crops and livestock - and mono culture of crops and also livestock is a big part of the problem.
We industrialize ag then look for industrial solutions to the problems it creates.

I think you are correct on this. I tend to blame it on the corporate and industrial nature of much livestock farming in the US, Brazil etc which is then used as the defacto standard for lots of research papers and reports to unfairly tarnish all farmers worldwide.

I suppose it is not quite clear how this differs from applying manure to the ground as has been done for centuries. If manure is not applied to the soil where does it go? I have heard some Dutch intensive producers send manure to the sewage works.

It seems more sensible to me to extract phosphorus from sewage. I know you can spread sewage on farmland but it is potentially contaminated in many cases.
