That's the catch. I'm not an engineer but there must be a way???

The way is to have American style electric brakes which work off a potentiometer linked to brake pedal position.
A much better alternative, which used to be available for LR Defender to extend towing capacity to 4 tons, is to fit air brakes.

Should have changed your adapter. The 13 pin plugs are far more reliable and they are the future. It's not like it is something 'new' now either.
Agreed. I have adaptors for conversion both ways as I borrow my neighbour's tipping trailer sometimes. One day I shall standardise on all 13 pins so I get fog lights, reversing lights etc

Our IWT lives outside & every time we use it,we have to shake/drain the light socket(13pin adapted down to7 because landrover dont do 13 pin)because its full of water:banghead:

Pretty sure that LR have had 13 pin electrics available for a good few years.
As for the male trailer end, you can actually park it underneath the body, in the relative dry. The coil is rather springy but it can be made to stow in the dry if you try.

I think Landrover offer a 13 pin option too,
But we can sell you a plug holder keeping your plug the right way up or even a 7 pin suzi to fit a Ifor William
