Grain bin paint

We have just cleaned off & painted our galv corrogated corn bin. Very good condition except the bottom 3 inches which is starting to show a bit of rust.
We thought there would be a better way of treating this strip than sloshing on some of Rickerby`s finest green paint

Any thoughts ?

Hi, Clearly the moisture sits at this 3" level in the tank hence the galvanizing has corroded through to expose the base steel?

Painting for longevity is all about preparation.

If it we me ,I'd give it a good wire brushing to remove any surface rust and then brush coat with some good quality zinc paste* ( very thick with a high zinc content). Then over coat with whatever you like .....Rickerby's finest or similar!
*Metaflux or Wurth have good products.
Good luck :)

As I dismantle grain bins, often wondered why paint Galvanised, the paint never lasts long as reacts with the Galvanised, plus they look tatty once it starts to flake off,
If they have been bitumen spray painted, I never touch them,

Bin was put up circa 1980.
Last coat of paint was about 10 years ago. Looks to me as if is in a better condition than non painted put up about the same time.
Only deteriation, as mentioned above,is the bottom 3 inches, which because we painted the bin, was noticed & will be given some treatment in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully further extending its life

think it gets quoted as most people know the name, but having used it, I would say it is not the best and is usually much more expensive than others available....we don't use it!
YMMV but I used Galvafroid years ago on a piece of steel that's been outdoors since then and it's still all there protecting the metal.

Following the advice of the good people of TFF we got a tin of Metaflux zinc paste.
A good session with a wire brush in the electric drill & one coat & its looking a good job.
1/3 of a tin left so will give it another coat tomorrow the some green on top.
Should be good for a few more years
