For future reference how would you handle this. Not the end of the world but really frustrating!
Sold 2 loads milling wheat for Nov movement. Neither load was taken by the 30th Nov and so extended for 2 weeks at 50p/T. 1 load went. The other load was rebooked in for the week before Christmas but never got collected. Rebooked for early Jan movement for another 50p/T. Told movement on the 15th Jan, I know not early Jan, but hey-ho! Not collected, Truck broke down apparently! I Said it could be collect 16th pm, 17th early am, before 8, as going out or any time after today. Phone call today at midday from lorry driver saying he was an hour away. Got short shrift and told him not to come. Now booked in for the 22nd! I think I deserve at least another 50p and a medal!
What are your rights on a contract? How would you handle it.
I want it moved to see how it goes through and to decide how I market some more!!

Lots of contracts being rolled forward with a carry. I'm still loading an October beans contract!

If the lorry breaks down or the consumer is full that's hardly the merchant's fault. If you really need it gone then ask them to move it ASAP. Are they paying promptly?

Thanks. I will see if they will add a little more on. I appreciate if the lorry broke down that is hardly their fault, so no issue with that.
As said not a massive issue just annoying!
Yes they paid for the first load promptly, and this one is meant to be on immediate payment.
Don't need it moved as such but would have liked it gone by now!

I understand haulage is getting very difficult to find for grains.
Reasons being too low a rate, but worse than that is the hassle and holdups at the mills.
It's time the mills were made to seriously upgrade their intakes, or else whack a bloody great shed up the lorries can tip in for them to sort at their leisure.
Being stuck for hours tipping is a bit of a pee take.

They could offer you some more........ Usually they would say a pound carry wrap it for a month. Hauliers are getting less because the rates are low, the waits excessive and the rejections are high. It all makes for a difficult business. There is very little in grain haulage.

Valid point, one of our hauliers has got one mill he won’t deliver into.

There are some Mills, hauliers flatly refuse to haul to. Re- the low haulage rate our transport department says in East Anglia at least 60 lorries are not working this year that worked last year ... and some say across the country there are at least 200 lorries fewer hauling grain!

Hopefully sorted to move on Monday. Adding another 50p. Fingers crossed!
In future I guess I just have to be more assertive about when I want it to go.
Thanks for the replies.

Why the hell mills don't put up a shed with separated bays I will never know, it would mean they are never waiting around for loads and so don't have to run out of anything or stop production, simply run your own shovel and ferry 10 tonnes across or something.

Also means they can buy in farmers grains and stock up ready for the weekend etc.

Had exactly this when I was doing the job, weigh in, tip up and be gone inside 10 minutes.

The screwing of hauliers for every last penny on rates is a nonsense, fertiliser is worse. I'd sooner pay the hauliers another £1/tonne or whatever they want and get good service, the end customers (farmers) would be a lot happier as well.

That's easy, sheds and concrete cost money, queueing trucks or to give them their official name "additional storage" cost them nothing.
At least drivers are paid by the hour so there is at least some effort made to unload them.

Sadly, this is the reality. Trucks are the cheapest form of storage! Too many sharp accountants who think just-in-time deliveries will work. Not when they are all at it & with no spare capacity. Someone has to pay for it eventually & I don't see this being resolved soon while there is a small queue of fresh hauliers with more ambition than sense. It's not just farmers who have faulty calculators/spreadsheets.

One mill that will remain nameless Uses trucks as storage all the time. We put in for waiting time and it never gets paid so we now refuse to go there. Hopefully with a few less hauliers they may learn why there will be a shortage of lorries to act as their mobile sheds.

The load did actually go on Monday so was pleased to see the lorry drive out. Hope should be on a fairly quick payment as well as the extra 50p! Though have now also sorted out BACS payments rather than a cheque being sent!
Maybe against my better judgment but I have sold them 2 loads for Feb. Lets see what happens with these ones.
